Copyright Issues
The Digital Repository Service at CENTRAL SALT & MARINE CHEMICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE, Bhavnagar has been developed to archive and provide open access to the research and other intellectual publications of Institute researchers. One of the major concerns associated with making material available in the repository is publisher's copyright. And major copyright concern is with journal articles. The following guidelines are helpful in deciding to archive publications in open-access institutional repositories.
Find
out the publisher of your publication. Then find out the
self-archiving policy of the publisher. Please check the following
sources to know more about the archiving policy.
* The
SHERPA/RoMEO Publisher Policies list (search by publisher) or
the EPrints/RoMEO Publisher
Policies list (search by journal title)
* The Lund
Directory of Open Access Journals lists "free, full text,
quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals by title and by
subject".
If the publisher is not listed in these sources, you may be able to find details of the copyright agreement you signed on the publisher's web site (often within the section on "Guidelines/instructions for authors/contributors").
Library staff can assist you in ascertaining publishers policies (contact: Mr. Arvind Sharma).
Some points to look out for:
Pre-prints: Many publishers do permit authors to make the pre-prints version of the article available in repositories. By this they are referring to the pre-refereed version.
Post-refereed version (Post-prints): Some publishers will allow the post-refereed, final author version, to be included in institutional repositories, but not in the form of the formatted PDF file that appears in the journal.
Publisher PDFs: Some publishers prefer the final PDF version to be used, as this is a clear indication that an article in a repository is the bona fide version.
Personal or departmental web sites: Some publishers will permit authors to make copies of their publications available on a personal web site, but not in an institutional repository.
